One Line

When a new romance exposes his deepest insecurities, Nick, a husky gay man, must learn that being seen, and staying seen, can be its own kind of love story.

The Story

In Between is a queer romantic dramedy that asks what happens when the person rejecting you is yourself. Think I Feel Pretty meets Am I OK?, with the emotional honesty of Fleabag.

Nick's love life is a loop of first dates, last texts, and loud disappointment. As a bigger gay man, he has learned to laugh off rejection before it can sting. Then comes Beau, confident, magnetic, British, and for a moment everything Nick thought he wanted. But when Beau's shame about being seen in public with him surfaces, Nick is forced to confront why he keeps attracting the wrong guy.

With help from his sharp-tongued queer friends, multiple therapists, and a few brutal epiphanies, Nick begins to realize that the love he has been chasing all along does not come with a British accent and a side of abs. It's a story about finally seeing yourself clearly: in a mirror, in love, and in between.

From Nicholas Molencupp

"This story is deeply personal. It's about the courage it takes to be seen, not just by someone else, but by yourself. We're making a film that reflects experiences rarely centered in gay cinema, with humor, heart, and the kind of honesty that comes from lived experience.

I want to focus the story around cinematic realism. In Between should feel like if Love, Simon met I Feel Pretty. Everyday settings, apartments, bars, therapy offices, will be shot with a warm, natural lens that celebrates imperfections and intimacy, while also keeping it poppy enough to live in the romcom space.

Emotional authenticity is very important to me. The camera will live close to Nick: handheld, imperfect, and intimate. Close-ups and unpolished movement will draw us into his perspective. The color palette begins confident and bright, fading into softer, quieter hues as Nick begins to heal. It's a story about finally seeing yourself clearly, in a mirror, in love, and in between."

Nick

Tired of waiting for leading roles that reflect his experience, queer actor and lifelong horror enthusiast Nicholas Molencupp created his own opportunity by writing, directing, and producing his debut feature, In Between. As the co-founder of Closet Monster Films, his work transforms personal declarations into universal stories for anyone who has ever felt trapped between who they are and what the world expects. Building on this momentum, Nicholas is actively expanding the company's slate through original writing and discovering bold new scripts, and is currently in development on their next feature film.
